QUESTAR GAS ASKS FOR GENERAL RATE INCREASE
SALT LAKE CITY – Questar Gas is asking the Utah Public Service Commission for a $17.2 million increase in its Utah general rates. If approved, the increase would raise the monthly bill for the typical residential customer by about $1, or less than 2 percent, beginning in August 2010.
This general-rate request covers the costs of system maintenance and expansion. It does not include the cost of natural gas that Questar Gas buys for its customers. Gas costs are passed on to customers without markup.
“This request, expected to be effective in August 2010, is necessary to maintain our system’s reliability and safety,” said Ron Jibson, Questar Gas president and CEO. “Our natural gas rates in Utah are consistently lower than every other state but Alaska. We’ve held the line on rates by aggressively controlling operating costs. But we now need to invest in our infrastructure just as Utah has had to invest in major new highway projects and replace bridges.”
Over the past five years, Questar Gas has increased its investment in gas- distribution facilities by 26 percent. Over the next five years, the utility estimates it will need to invest $40 million to $50 million annually to replace infrastructure.
“Our employees are getting the job done for our Utah customers – we’ve kept our costs and rates down without sacrificing service or reliability,” said Jibson. “We’re asking state regulators to allow us to maintain the high levels of service and reliability that our customers have come to expect.”
